About the program

Workers’ Rights Education and Support Program – WRESP is a Queensland Government funded program focused on the delivery of education and support services to empower workers to understand their work rights and develop confidence in seeking rectification of issues they may encounter in the workplace.

Many migrant community members experience workplace exploitation. This includes things like unsafe work, underpayment, sexual harassment, and being discriminated against. In these circumstances, many people from multicultural communities normally talk to “trusted people/sources” in their community to get advice, rather than approaching available services and supports.

We are now seeking Expressions of Interest for Community Champion roles in the Toowoomba, Gatton, and Ipswich regions.

What is the problem we want to change?

We want to identify people who are currently or have the potential to become trusted people in their own communities.

We will train them to be Community Champions around workplace rights so that they can support personal and collective actions within their own communities.

Community Champions will be able to plan and support actions with their community members to help them overcome uncertainty and fear, connect with existing support services, and address workplace exploitation in their own communities.

What will a Community Champion actually do?

The Community Champions will have a total of 50 hours of paid work over a 6-month period. In this period, Champions will:

  • Receive training on different aspects of workers’ rights.
  • Engage with their community and provide education on workers’ rights in Australia and avenues for support if experiencing workplace exploitation.
  • Make plans with other partners to address workplace rights exploitation in their communities and work together to implement these plans from a trauma-informed practice perspective.

Multicultural Australia acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet today.
As the world’s oldest living cultures, we recognise that Australia always has been and always will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land.
We who come from many places pay our respects to Elders throughout all time and commit to learning from the knowledge, traditions, stories, spirituality, and experiences of Aboriginal people as we learn to live on their land.
We walk together in solidarity of the pain of the past, and in shared hope for the future.
