Diversity And Inclusion

About the project

Lack of access to welfare or equitable employment opportunities, low levels of English language proficiency and unfamiliarity with Australian workplace or legal systems and culture, can place migrant and refugee workers (particularly temporary visa holders) at risk of being victimised by exploitation or unfair work practices.

The Workers’ rights education and support services program is a Queensland Government funded program focused on the delivery of education and support services to empower workers to understand their work rights and develop confidence in seeking rectification of issues they may encounter in the workplace.

The program will complement existing government efforts to achieve fairer and safer workplaces for people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Multicultural Australia is proud to work in collaboration with the Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma (QPASTT), and Queensland Community Alliance (QCA) on the Workers’ rights education and support services program.

What are we trying to change?

We want to identify people who are the currently or have the potential to become trusted people in their own communities.

We will train them to be Community Champions around workplace rights so that they can support personal and collective actions within their own communities.

Community Champions will be able to plan and support actions with their community members to help them overcome uncertainty and fear, connect with existing support services, and address workplace exploitation in their own communities.

We who have come from many places acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land which always was and always will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island land. We pay our respects to their Elders throughout all time. We walk together in solidarity of the pain of the past and the shared hope for the future.
